Random thoughts on Missouri's sunshine law written by a lawyer who has an undying interest in this subject which probably only interests a few other folks in this state.

You think that I don’t mean a single thing I say? It’s only Words, and words are all I have….

A few days ago, someone called to inquire about their county commissioners.  They were holding meetings with individual department heads.  They WERE posting notice of the meetings.  Good, I thought.  So what’s the problem?

Well, the question is whether they were taking minutes of the meetings.  Interesting question, I thought.  A meeting of a quorum of a public governmental body, discussing public business, even posting notice of the meetings.  Sure, minutes are required.

So, yes, I suggested there needs to be minutes taken of these meetings.  The law specifically mandates that minutes be taken of meetings of public governmental bodies.

So off the caller went to check.  I’m hoping that he finds a positive response.  If not, perhaps a story of two about the problem will solve it!  Amazing what a little black ink can to do let the sunshine in!
